Introduction
The Sports Premium Grant (SPG) is government funding to provide additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of all primary-aged pupils, to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles.
Its aim is to:
- Develop or add to the Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) activities that the school already offers.
- Build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.
Schools use the funding to prioritise PE and sport premium spending to improve in the following 5 key areas:
- increasing all staff’s confidence, knowledge and skills in teaching PE and sport
- increasing engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity and sport
- raising the profile of PE and sport across the school, to support whole school improvement
- offer a broader and more equal experience of a range of sports and physical activities to all pupils
- increase participation in competitive sport
St Luke’s used its 2023/24 funding of £17,700 to;
- provide swimming lessons to all classes from Year 2 - Year 6
- provide structured lunch time sports sessions for the children via Peak Active Sports
- participate in a wide range of out of school sports events and competitions
- Introduce new sports via the curriculum-time clubs that run on a Wednesday
- enable staff to learn from subject experts and develop their own competencies in teaching PE
